This duct work and expansion joint assembly was custom designed by U.S. Bellows for an oil refinery in California. The project consists of 36″ x 48″ 304 stainless steel oval shaped duct work with a thick wall expansion joint and 30″ x 16″ carbon steel round shaped duct work. It is designed for 900°F at 13.2 psig, and the entire assembly was dye penetrant examined and 100% x-rayed prior to shipment.
Various sizes of thick wall flanged and flued head expansion joints were custom designed for heat exchangers in California. Two are 30″ in diameter and two are 18″ in diameter. They were designed for 1″ axial extension and 14 psig at 300°F. All four expansion joints were fabricated from ASTM A-516 Gr. 70 carbon steel material. A dye penetrant exam was conducted prior to shipping.
Thick-wall expansion joints may be a cost-effective option for large-diameter piping systems which operate at low pressure. Metals can be selected to satisfy different temperature conditions. The distribution of axial, angular, and lateral forces will be much higher when thick-wall expansion joints are used. We can provide your design engineers with the calculated forces and movements for proper design of the structural members supporting the system. These joints have a long life which justifies the initial investment.

Thick-wall expansion joints are used primarily in heat exchangers and large diameter piping systems where thin-wall expansion joints would not be sufficient. The bellows are typically fabricated from A516 Grade 70 material, with the thickness ranging from 3/16″ to 1″. Other materials are available to meet different temperature requirements.

Thick-wall Flanged and Flued Head Expansion Joints
This 30 foot long tied universal thick wall expansion joint is fabricated from carbon steel with 316 stainless steel bellows. The bellows are fabricated from 1/4″ thick flanged and flued heads. It is designed for an axial movement rate of 1/2″ with a lateral movement rate of 1-13/16″. The expansion joint was 100% x-ray tested and air & soap bubble tested prior to shipping.

U.S. Bellows, Inc. designed and fabricated two 78″ I.D. x 110″ O.D. and two 36″ I.D. x 68″ O.D. thick wall flanged and flued head expansion joints. All four expansion joints were fabricated from 1/4″ thick ASTM A516 grade 70 carbon steel plate. The expansion joints were cold formed and heat treated to customer requirements. The external surface of the expansion joint was painted with one coat of shop primer. The weld ends of the expansion joint are beveled, and drainage plugs are installed in the crest of the bellows. The bellows long weld seams were 100% dye-penetrant and 100% x-ray tested. U.S. Bellows provides 100% customer satisfaction in terms of quality and delivery.
48" Diameter, Thick-Wall Expansion Joint for a refinery in Louisiana
Sweco Fab, a division of Piping Technology & Products, Inc., fabricated a 48-inch diameter thick-wall expansion joint for a refinery in Louisiana. The joint was fabricated from carbon steel with a 1/8″ minimum thickness. It is designed for an axial force of 2,500 lbs/in with a 1.15-inch axial deflection and a lateral force of 30,000 lbs./in. with a 0.002-inch lateral deflection.

Thick Wall Expansion Joints for Texas Refinery
The three pictures above show thick wall expansion joints being installed in a Texas refinery. Workers are covering the expansion joints with insulation, then covering the insulation with aluminum. The 72” expansion joints, which are fabricated from 1/4” carbon steel plate, have a 10” convolution.
Twelve Foot Diameter 304 Stainless Steel Thick Wall Duct Expansion Joint
A twelve foot diameter 304 stainless steel thick wall duct expansion joint produced by Piping Technology & Products, Inc. is shown supported and braced ready for shipment. Special equipment had rolled the knuckles from ¼” material which is then circumferentially welded. This results in an expansion joint with the minimum stresses possibly exerted and, at the high point of the convolution, its most vulnerable area.

The 72” diameter thick wall expansion joint pictured above is for SO2 service. It has 8 3/16” thick, 10 1/2” high 304H bellows to allow 4” of axial compression and 2 1/2″ of lateral deflection. These thick wall joints are designed with indefinite cycle life.
