This duct work and expansion joint assembly was custom designed by U.S. Bellows for an oil refinery in California. The project consists of 36″ x 48″ 304 stainless steel oval shaped duct work with a thick wall expansion joint and 30″ x 16″ carbon steel round shaped duct work. It is designed for 900°F at 13.2 psig, and the entire assembly was dye penetrant examined and 100% x-rayed prior to shipment.
Various sizes of thick wall flanged and flued head expansion joints were custom designed for heat exchangers in California. Two are 30″ in diameter and two are 18″ in diameter. They were designed for 1″ axial extension and 14 psig at 300°F. All four expansion joints were fabricated from ASTM A-516 Gr. 70 carbon steel material. A dye penetrant exam was conducted prior to shipping.
Thick-wall expansion joints may be a cost-effective option for large-diameter piping systems which operate at low pressure. Metals can be selected to satisfy different temperature conditions. The distribution of axial, angular, and lateral forces will be much higher when thick-wall expansion joints are used. We can provide your design engineers with the calculated forces and movements for proper design of the structural members supporting the system. These joints have a long life which justifies the initial investment.

Thick-wall expansion joints are used primarily in heat exchangers and large diameter piping systems where thin-wall expansion joints would not be sufficient. The bellows are typically fabricated from A516 Grade 70 material, with the thickness ranging from 3/16″ to 1″. Other materials are available to meet different temperature requirements.

72" Diameter Thick Wall Expansion Joint
The 72” diameter thick wall expansion joint pictured above is for SO2 service. It has 8 3/16” thick, 10 1/2” high 304H bellows to allow 4” of axial compression and 2 1/2″ of lateral deflection. These thick wall joints are designed with indefinite cycle life.
